VALLEY OF SONG (OCTOBER 1964)

It was not our original intention to perform this show, but during the past few months our membership has become a little depleted, and we thus found it impossible to go into rehearsal for “White Horse Inn”

Despite many setbacks and minor worries regarding suitable costumes, booking of the Hall, and maintaining a Welsh accent throughout, “Valley Of Song” really turned out to be a very tuneful score. It was typically Ivor Novello-ish of course, but then his music was meant for gaiety and romance, and most of our audiences had a thoroughly enjoyable evening. Many of them applauded our last number, the solo part being sung by Joyce Randall with a background chorus of men singing “Keep The Home Fires Burning”

Costumes, though not the most flattering the girls had paraded in, were off-set handsomely by the gold-braided regalia of the men, and the final appearance of Robin Aldworth in the disguise of Father Christmas added a touch of seasonal effectiveness.

This was the last of our performances with Vic Randall as Producer, and also of Barbara Parsons in a leading role. In fact, there seems to be a reproduction spell on the leading ladies of our Society. In the past Phyllis Knight (now Mrs J Probert) who was one of the founder members since 1945 had to give up the star role twice in five years to carry on with the joys of Motherhood. Then Norma Evans decided to present husband John with a son, and now Barbara Parsons anticipates a similar event in the spring. We think The Stork must have been nesting around here, and hope she won't hover too long, as we cannot afford to lose any more good soprano voices.

“Thank goodness” says our Joan, “I play the piano”

Altogether this was a well-chosen show, although perhaps not one of our best, but indeed very singable, as befits all Welsh choirs.
