MERRIE ENGLAND - CORONATION PRODUCTION |
Extract from the Middlesex Chronicle |
Flushed with their recent successful production of "The Duchess of Dantzic", the Hatton Operatic Society achieved another notable success with "Merrie England" which began a three day run at the Hatton Road Primary School Hall, Bedfont, on Wednesday. Perhaps the presence of Feltham's Coronation Queen, her two ladies-in-waiting, and the Chairman of the Council, Mrs Williams, inspired the performers to even greater heights. The audience was treated to some really fine singing. |
The decision to produce "Merrie England" for the Coronation was made so suddenly that there was no time to print programmes and the players had to make their own costumes as they were unable to hire any. |
Sir Walter was played by Harold Watson, Bessie Throckmorton by Angela Jenkins and Lord Essex by Daniel McConnachie. These were excellent and claimed incessant applause. Joyce Randall portrayed a ruthless, domineering, human and womanly Queen Elizabeth. Producer Derek Knight and Musical Director Reginald Curtis may claim much credit. Others in the cast were: Jill-all-Alone - Phyllis Knight; May Queen - Belle Barker; Kate - Doris Seaman; Long Tom - Frederick Morris; Big Ben - Edward Miller and Wilkins - Alfred Smith. "Merrie England" was also staged again at Feltham Park and at the Hanworth Village Hall. |
