Essgee’s
HMS PINAFORE
Gilbert & Sullivan for the 21st Century
Magna Carta Arts Centre, 19-23 May 2009
Director: Pat Martin
Musical Director: Howard Chapman
This new version of the Gilbert & Sullivan classic was first performed in Melbourne in 1997 by Essgee Entertainment which is an Australian company founded by Simon Gallaher (SG) who is a singer, pianist, songwriter, theatrical producer and entrepreneur from Brisbane. Although much of the original score and libretto is retained, the music and choreography is performed in a lively, modern style. The show also includes numbers from Iolanthe, Princess Ida, Ruddigore and The Grand Duke and the character of Dick Deadeye plays a more prominent role than in the original opera.
