Music by George Bizet Adapted and arranged by Bobbie Field Book and lyrics by David Badger
11-15 May 2010 Magna Carta Arts Centre, Staines Director: Clive Walker Musical Director: Paul Nash
This new version of Bizet’s masterpiece received its first public performance at the Cliffs Pavilion, Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex by the Little Theatre Club (who commissioned it) on 2 April 1990. Since then it has been performed by several other groups in the UK and Australia. The opera has been reduced from four acts to two and there is no recitative - this is replaced by spoken dialogue. Some of the smaller male roles (such as the two smuggler leaders Dancairo and Remendado) are now non-singing and some of the music has been shortened or modified but only one major musical number (the “Smugglers’ Quintet”) has been completely omitted. We are delighted to welcome back the production team of Clive Walker and Paul Nash who were responsible for the Society’s award-winning production of Jane Eyre in 2008. The principal roles have now been cast but Carmen requires a large chorus so we are still seeking new members (particularly men!).
